Handbrake

I was working on a 2 this afternoon at a small garage. Started from scratch & wound pistons back, etc,as is known.
Until working on mine the garage owner had never worked on a 2 before.

Finished off adjusting the handbrake lever, & I asked him if he'd heard that the auto-adjuster only started working on the 7th ratchet click.?  He hadn't. The MR2 can't be the only car that uses the system-type, so is it true or a myth?

If it's true, can someone explain why/how it works?

The handbrake is working a lot better...the owner will be pleased.
