Have a look at what he's created here:

The simple fact of the matter is that bhp performance gains of any real significance will cost £'000's.

Once you're settled with the fact that you're not going to get more BHP unless you spend the significant cash there are a lot of mods/maintenance that you can do to help:
Braking
 - check your discs and pads, well maintained standard ones are very good, even for track (so I'm told)
 - Put in braided brake lines (see shnazzle's group buy) - this makes a big difference to the car squirm when braking hard.
Handling
 - A front strut brace will do wonders for the sharpness of handling, reduction of cabin shake and performance over potholes
 - A mid under brace (e.g. Matt's TTE brace) will make the car even better all round.
 - have a look at Corkys bracing (US based) the full package is costly but apparently very good
 - Poly bushes (meh...) personally I'd rather I hadn't put them in the front.. rather spend the cash and replace with standard rubber etc.
-  Coilovers (megabucks) - dont have them but I'm told they are good...
Power accessiblity:
 -  CAPS MAF mod. This does not create any additional power, but makes the power more accessible. Torque is more readily available.
 - Clean your MAF - you will be surprised at the difference (usually)
 - Markiii intake pipe  - again, not more power but you do seem to climb the revs better
 - Paper filters vs aftermarkets.... someone made a good point that the 2zz engine has the same paper filtering housing... and that engine's at 190... so there's not much point in changing ours!
 - Exhaust, no more power but nicer sound/appearance.
 - exhaust manifold - be sure to remove your pre-cats if you haven't done so already

ok, someone else take over...

Thanks for the info, I've had a look and the pre cats are still in there but they look to be in good condition from what I can see

Would you still advise to remove them?

Totally. They are of no value to you, and you can't tell what's corroding out of sight

Mine are gutted and they pass fine.
If any thing just get them to ensure the engine is warm pre-test.

I thought I was doing quite well but I haven't even scratched the surface according to that list!
2zz by Rogue. Se7en cams. BMC CDA. Competion clutches lightened flywheel, Megillian Racing Exhaust. TRD sportivo suspension and ARB\'s. TRD braces. TRD quick shift. TRD dash kit, Matts brace. Getting there but not sure when it will stop!

Driver training
Maybe not the answer people want to hear but whats the point in more bhp or higher cornering speeds when you dont know how to use it?
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Beat me to it.

Best mod, driver training. Best bit. It is transferable between any car. Win Win.

Lose some weight. From driver or car, preferably from both. Weigh reduction is mostly easy, some cases even free, but generally needs more or less £$€.

Its not until you go on a training day and guys in stock cars are just as fast that you realise how little difference an extra 80 bhp make.when you know f all about how to use it.
