Standard vs Smaller Steering wheel - Opinions?

Those that have had both standard steering wheels and aftermarket smaller ones, what have you preferred for non-track use?

The reason why I changed to a smaller steering wheel is because I thought the standard one was too big. And when on track using a smaller wheel was so much better. But seeming that my car is going to be more of a road car, does the different driving style effect the feel of the wheel?

I've got meisterR coilies, adjustable polybushed arbs, adjustable polybushed arms, ad08rs, so the ride is going to be harsher than normal. And the steering wheel tends to feed you that harshness. Do you think that the size of the steering wheel wont matter so much as a) it'll be on the road so wont be bothered by a larger steering wheel and b) a larger steering wheel will reduce the harshness transmitted through the ride?

Josh is doing it again.
Mate is it a track build or a touring build?

Subscribed, I also am interested in people's responses to this topic, the wheel (for me at least) is a little too big and far away so It keeps getting my thighs, i'm only 6ft and not a fatty; it seems like it was built for a smaller driver

You sure? i know you had a elise but with the poly's, coilies, yoko's the ride cant be comfortable for touring.

Nope not sure, never bloody sure  s:( :( s:(

I think the best bet is to create something very similar to Rogers turbo. That had standard suspension, but it also had much larger wheels. So I was hoping that with the coilies on soft setting but smaller wheels with a bigger profile should create a similar ride? But on the odd occasion that I take it on track I will b able to up the damping and ARBS and it should perform relatively well.

Just wondered whether the steering wheel would have much of an effect of driving feel? I think someone else needs to start making the decisions for me, because clearly I cant    s:cry:  s:cry:

A 320/330mm steering wheel is ideal, the stock wheel is like something from a bus! Any smaller than 320mm however & it feels very silly. I would also recommend an extending boss, so that it can be adjusted to sit closer to you. That small amount of adjustability makes a massive difference.

Id sack the poly's off, i wouldn't go bigger than 16" regardless of wheel size you have to get the tyres right, as you know the yoko and r888 have side walls made out of pure rock haha. I will eventually daily on coileys and the sp's but only on t1r's as they help the ride no end. For track it'll go to my pre fl which will prob be replaced with fl's.

I think polys was a step too far for a touring build.
Why dont you go with your heart forget the v6 and go full track 2zz.

Problem is, the rear arms are all aftermarket so they all have standard polybushes, so cant really replace with normal bushes. ARBs are whiteline adjustable, again polybushed. Really not sure I can bring myself to sell all the suspension items i've just upgraded because they've got polys lol  s:( :( s:(

No definitely not going bigger than 16''. Got PFL wheels at the moment. Next year was considering the enkei RPF1s 15/16. Just so I can have some wider rubber on the back.

Hmm, you could be right about the tyres. Maybe if I find a softer sidewall it will help. I wonder what tyres are out there inbetween the T1rs and the ad08rs in terms of sidewall stiffness.

I use a 300mm wheel on mine. Although a small wheel I'm a big guy and need the space under the wheel for my legs. Very direct input though.

One of the main criteria of the size of the steering wheel was the ability to turn from lock to lock without taking your hands off of the wheel.
I could do this in my MGF and just about in my MR2 (larger wheel, oh shame   s:lol:  s:lol:  ) but not quite in the Golf.

So a competition thing really.

As Above..  I've gone to 320mm Momo to achieve the lock to lock test.  With the added advantage that it feels much nicer to the touch.
