Hi folks,

Thinking of spending a bit of money on my 2 again. Just wondering if anybody has tried the TRD Quick Shift and K&N Induction below, and what they thought of them?

Induction Kit -  m http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/produ ... 14657&rw=1 m

Quick Shift -  m https://www.japanparts.com/parts/detail/2441 m

Or would something like this be better instead of the quick shift -  m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Celica ... 4acb51e453 m

Cheers

might be worth reading around regards the k+n.

On a stock engine not sure it brings much to the party. Someone has just removed theirs to go back to stock.
The same airbox and filter is used in the 2zz. So the 1zz is not going to be short of air.
Just a thought.

Don't go for any induction kit that doesn't collect air from either the stock location or from behind the battery. You want nice cool air from OUTSIDE the engine bay. Get a markiii pipe instead. Don't go for a performance filter either.
Many people are happy with the eBay short shifts personally I'm going for the real McCoy.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Make your own induction kit and fit behind battery.
Silicone bend, scrap airbox MAF holder and filter of choice.

Spend the savings on a proper short shifter!

Sounds good  s:) :) s:)  filter of choice as like just buy a k&n cone?

How do you work it with the maf holder? I think there's a how to somewhere on here isn't there?

Why not use an enclosed box like a BMC cda ? I wouldn't be to keen about an open filter in the engine bay of the mr2, it gets hot under there and heat soak will loose you power!

I like the sound of that. It would still be best to re-route it to behind the battery though? If I bought a bmc cda induction kit would I still have to get a MAF housing? Ive read you need them for any aftermarket induction kit on an mr2 roadster.

Would it be worth doing what Zonda done here, like what zandaw mentioned http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=42473

The reason I was looking at the k&n 57i was cs i like the idea that there was no change in noise until you put your'e foot down...whats the bmc like in regards this?

Thanks for the help  s:) :) s:)

Comme ca with filter behind battery where air is normally picked up but without torturous transfer route.

Readings look good on DashCommand and performed well on Tuscany trip last August.

Cheers Jandaw

Did the drive, acceleration etc feel good and smooth then?

Apart from easier breathing and a pleasant induction sound I don't perceive any significant change in performance. Consumption, tickover, etc have shown no change. It's an inexpensive kitchen table mod and fun to make.

The note comes in around 3k revs when accelerating only and is less intrusive than an exhaust might be but each to his own.

sounds good. going to give my insurance a ring in the morning to see how it affects it then buy my parts if all goes well  s:) :) s:)

TRD Short Shift has arrived, as has the CBS filter and ASH silicone hoses and ducting. Just waiting on the Spectre MAF holder arriving now.

Going to be a while before I can fit them though, I've a broken wrist at the minute and hard to do anything with this cast, let a lone grip a steering wheel or spanner  s:( :( s:(

MAF adapter arrived on Saturday morning but only had time to fit the quick shifter

Very easy to do and what a difference it made   s:D :D s:D   wouldn't go back now. Shortered the throw nicely and the gearstick sits a bit lower now, as you can see below

Before:

After:

The clips below were tricky to get out but prizing them up with a screwdriver and pulling from the top top with pliers done the trick

The instructions said to bolt the cage back down then attach the linkage clip below:

But this was a nightmare as I've lost my pointy nose pliers, so just unbolted the cage, put the clip on then bolted it back down again

Finally got round to fit the induction kit.

Car Builder Solutions BMC style filter, ASH silicone hose and ducting, spectre performance MAF adapter.

All went ok and great noise when flooring it, while still quiet when pottering around.

Only issue is that the screws with the MAF Adapter are slightly too long, so the actual sensor isn't 100% flush to the holder, so there's a slight air leak. Going to cut the screws tomorrow night hopefully if I get the time and put a bit of sealant on as well.

So, after a few days driving things aren't too good  s:( :( s:(

was VERY lumpy at the start and would barely accelerate but that quickly changed after we got the screws tightened up. Was just idleing very low after that, at about 400 or 500 rpm and juddering a lot. The lights were dimming when it was doing this as well.

I've tried cleaning the MAF and resetting the ECU by disconnecting that battery for 10 or 20 minutes then taking a drive but no difference. In fact tonight it was actually back to square one. It judders in low revs in 1st and 2nd but at all other points it is fine.

The accelerator is sticking when you get in and press it the first time as well.

I had to leave it with my uncle (mechanic) tonight to have a look at over the next couple of days.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Battery or alternator? If lights are dimming....

That certainly sounds like something more than just a filter/breathing issue.

Silly question but are you definitely sure the battery was all wired up again properly? Also check with all the fiddling that you haven't dislodged anything, maybe around the IAC.

Dead on folks cheers

I've a real busy week in work here, quite a few late nights, so I've left it with my uncle but mentioned about the battery and the IAC.

IAC Def could be a good shout because he was adjusting it 2 nights ago

I'll let you know at the weekend when I get it back

So

the original airbox is now back in the car. There was too much air getting into the filter and into the engine. I'm going to call out and get it after work but I'm going to try fit the CBS one back into the car but put it in the same place as the standard air box - thinking behind this is that it should be ok as it is an enclosed filter the same as the standard airbox. Just going to connect it to the pipe going to the rear light that the standard air box goes to - what do you think?

Just need some new hose

You may as well stick with the standard airbox in that case

I'm happy to be corrected on this but that doesn't sound quite right to me.

The air into the engine is controlled by throttle body, the setup you had isn't compressing/forcing the air in there so it shouldn't actually be entering the engine much quicker than normal (marginal based on reduced restriction), certainly not enough to cause problems. After all you can, in theory, run it without any filter at all as far as I know and it should work fine.

Also many people have run the ducting/filter in that location and not experienced this. For comparison, my Apexi cone will more than likely have even greater flow than the CBS one you have and that is running absolutely fine. It definitely sounds much more like a control/MAF/IAC issue to me still.

Agree with Meeerrrk though, moving it to the stock position negates any benefit you get from the mod. It'll run a similar temp, most likely wont be any less restrictive, probably isn't as good as the panel filter for actual filtration and, maybe worst of all, you won't hear it with the engine between your ears and the filter.

I'll be interested to see if it's running 100% normal on the stock air box  when you pick it up.
