I'm working with a village garage mechanic to replace my gearbox. He got the right side shaft out, but struggling with the left.
Tried using an air hammer top, & belting it with a mallet below.  He believes it's a matter of overcoming grip of a circlip.....?
Any suggestions.?

He's right. I think the manual recommends rotating the shaft a bit between each blow.
Also if you can pull it out as far as it goes before you hit it it helps.

Vaguely recall some sort of sliding clip. To aid? Alignment.

The manual I have doesn't mention rotating between hits, but it is a proven technique the get the snap ring in different positions.  Some axles come out relatively easy, and some take a very solid hit from a large hammer.  I would not use an air hammer.

Update on this is he split the driveshaft early this morning. So still has the cup to do once the 'box is out.

Thanks for the advice folks.

Your mechanic was right about the circlip, I've belatedly found this post from @Carolyn on the subject of drive shaft removal.

Use a sledge! I've had this frustration myself.

H just got the big bar in behind the lip and gave it a few good "waggles" and out it came. Make sure you have replacement seals ready though, they're left and right handed.
Weirdly they were harder to fit than the shaft was to remove as we didn't have anything just the right size to hand to hit them flush so had to gently go round the clock with them.

Yep, seals already acquired for replacement 'box.

I had two sets in readiness as they were half price at the time and I was confident it would be the one thing I clocked up!

Had the inside CV boot replaced by National today.  Sent them a link to this for removing the driveshaft, as it also had a guide to the gearbox oil

If the garage owner/mechanic does that I'll be wanting to kill him 1st!
Hoping to do the run next weekend.....no glitches required!

So it needs the right size drift on it.....yes?

It would certainly make it easier than doing it without and they're slightly different sizes too [emoji23]
Once we'd got them started it wasn't too bad clocking them round but they're not the most robust seals so can't give them a proper lovetap without a proper sized drift or big socket.
