Are induction Kits any good!

Apart from making a nice noise to they offer any improved performance or fuel economy?

I have heard that its difficult to keep the warm air away and that the Stock Air Intake is a better set up.
I may just use the Stock air intake and replace the cardboard filter with a K&N one which would be better.

I have read that some people have drilled holes in the Stock air intake to make a better sound,
has anyone got any photos of this?
where do you drill the holes?
How many and how bigger holes?
Would that not let warm air in and affect the performance ie create flat spots?

A couple improve performance,  all the rest just sound good. Stock box + markiii pipe are one of the best. There's loads of details / comparisons if you do a search.

Not heard of the drilling holes before so can't comment.

Where can I get a Markiii pipe from and how does that work?
Is it routed differently?

Better ask mr2roc user Markiii for one of his pipes or have a look on the "private sales" section here. The routing is just the same as the Toyota elbow. Bear in mind the Markiii pipe is well made and fits like a glove but if you're a skinflint, you could fit a cheapo flex-hose like a member did (can't remember his name). Another cheap option: I fit a silicone elbow (fixed length, fixed angle) and just had to remove one of the plastic screws that hold the long flexible intake tube near the left fender in place as the degree doesn't perfectly match the one of the OEM pipe. Doesn't seem to hurt anything, though, and looks and works just fine. Here's the one I've used, just added two hose clips:

Again, only Mark's pipe is a straight fit, others might require some work to it.

Thanks

So what advantage would the Silicone Hose have over the Stock one?

And would the Silicone hose and a few clips along with the replacement K&N filter be all I need?
Does the Map Sensor need relocating?

Afaik the fixed diameter of the hose leads to a slightly altered throttle response across the rev range (better pick up in mid to high areas) whereas the standard piping is reported to have been tuned to improved pickup in a low rev range. I'm sure someone can chime in on that. Not sure whether it affects the noise but folks have mentioned that there's just a hint more of intake noise.

Wouldn't advise to change anything regarding the location of the map sensor and I'd steer clear of the other mods you have described as well. As many here and over at Spyderchat have pointed out, the intake as-is works very well with respect to allowing cold air to enter your engine.

I like this idea, does the hose fit inside the flange on the box or over the top of the flange and secured with clamps?

Do you have a photo of it fitted?

Car's currently blocked by two other vehicles but I'll try to get a pic by tomorrow at the latest. In my memory, it fits over the top.

Not sure whether or not the lack of surface smoothness affects flow negatively. Elbow's smooth and sure looks better  s;) ;) s;)

Just a sneak peek on the inlet elbow, I think you got the idea.

Great,
I have found and bought this on ebay I will be fitting this weekend along with my new K&N filter.
I will need to cut it to fit, and the outer Diameter is 70mm which will slot into the existing holes.

Seems like Mark III pipes are pretty rare these days.  Do they come up for sale often?

(I'm really starting to regret not stripping my old MR2 of it's 'choice' parts before i sold it  s:( :( s:( )

I have heard that its difficult to keep the warm air away and that the Stock Air Intake is a better set up.

There is a large amount of bad information online about gains to be had from air induction kits. (they want to sell more products so they bend the truth)
Here are some truths:
Cold air is more dense.  Once it reaches the intake manifold and combustion chamber it begens to expand a bit.  The ecu adjusts for this by providing more fuel.  More air and more fuel = more power.  More fuel used = worse fuel mileage.
There is an online forum called eco modder where they go over these topics in detail but the basics is that warm air provides better fuel mileage and less power.  Many oems route the air inlet pipe over or near the radiator for that reason (to absorb some heat).

Whats wrong with you man?

Well the good news is that there are some Matt's brace alternatives. I think headcase made one. It's more like the Corky's

Now fitted but took a bit of jiggling about to get it to fit as the angle is a little more that 45 degrees, but its now in and looks good in polished Alloy.

Maybe it would have been a lot easier to fit if it wasn't rigid, with a Silicone one you would have had a lot of flexibility but I don't think the ones they do in 300mm lengths would have been long enough.

Did you use 76mm internal diameter and 150x150 legs?

That's the one I've fitted, right. 76mm ID, 15cm legs. I bought it as a cheeky guess but considering how little work was involved to fit it I'm happy with it. As seen in the pic, the pipe will be ever so slightly dented by the bin and due to the 15 cm legs being just slightly short, the long intake tube on the left side of the engine compartment needs a little bending but all good.
