new clutch and flywheel on TTE turbo

Hi, I need some clutch advice....

Looks like my stock clutch is too worn to handle the TTE turbo I just fitted - it just slips maddly when the turbo kicks in - so I'm going to have to replace it (and upgrade too). Anyone got any thoughts on whether I'd be OK with an Stage 1 or if it would be better to get a Stage 2? The Exedy stage 1 can apparently handle 200 ftlbs, the stage 2 can handle 230 ftlbs, the CC stage 2 even more. From what I have read the turbo is giving me something like 200 ftlbs, so at the limit of the Exedy stage 1 on paper.

It's for (occasionally spirited) street driving though, no track days or trips to santa pod, so I don't want it to be uncomfortably heavy.

I'd appreciate it if anyone who has changed the clutch on a TTE turbo MR2 could gimme their thoughts on the matter......

Also, being absolutely addicted to this business of modding, I figure I might as well fit a lighter flywheel while I'm down there. Might this cause problems with the TTE piggyback ECU mapping?

Thanks in advance
matt

A brand new oem clutch will be fine or a stage 1 clutch.

Superart just fitted his and is running standard clutch with no problem. I have trd and it's far too heavy duty for a standard set up.

P.s - glad you got the turbo installed  s:) :) s:)

Try a Helix sport clutch very nice not heavy at all although if you stick to stock tte you shouldnt really need it. Stock tte is under 200 ftlbs btw. Could be more if you have a freer flowing exhaust.

Not sure a lightened fly wheel is such a big deal with a turbo yes it gains revs quicker but it also looses them quicker.
If i had an NA 2zz build then i would go for it.

I had the Helix sport clutch in mine with 230lb/ft. It was light and easy to drive on the road, would definitely recommend.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll ditch my stage 2 ideas for now and take a look at these other options you've suggested. Seriously though, what a PIA! Just bolted it all back together and now gotta take it apart again! At least I'm learning what's down there I guess. Also... nearly jumped out of the car when it made the demented squirrel noise - was not expecting that. crazy.

I would recommend you fit a boost gauge. Would have saved me grief when i had issues with my turbo kit. If thinking about upgrades would suggest wideband afr kit and oil temp/pressure gauges.
I killed a turbo giving it too much welly before oil got up to temp with pressure sky high.

.. And make sure it's a good boost gauge and not one that reads 2psi under  s:) :) s:)
...neutiquam erro.

Hmm that's an interesting idea... for one thing I'm running out of things to fit to it now! And who doesn't like gauges??
Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it.... someone might have to explain to me how to use it though! (ie whats good and bad in terms of readings)

Tein springs went on today btw - wow - didn't realise how much difference 30mm would make - it looks a lot more .... sporty? now  s:) :) s:)

Ok so I had a quick look at gauges and  s:( :( s:(  confused again! There's such a thing as too much choice (and tbh I've no idea what wideband AFR is... yet!)

"a good boost gauge and not one that reads 2psi under"

... any recomendations for that, to save me from making a huge mistake?

I have a cheap digital gauge.
You want something that reads in psi and doesnt go too high.
A tte doesnt make more than 7-8 psi max so an analogue gauge that reads 5 bar isnt much good the needle will hardly move.
I have an sp240 kit that is based on the tte.
My gauge show the kit working perfectly with a peak of 10 psi falling to 7 psi at the limiter.

Quality or more expensive brands that spring to mind are Innovate AEM and SPA

Hehe, i just LOVE these cars!

so yeah cheap(ish) digital boost gauge suitable for low boost apps. I shall get one... after all, sports car not family wagon, right? Thats my new motto  s:D :D s:D   s:D :D s:D

As most things push big numbers the trick is finding one that only covers low numbers.
Something upto 1 bar would do.

tte only pushing a few psi but works very nicely.
I was tempted to fit one, but could not decide where and all looked too big for the cabin.
Decided to leave it and trust that Mr Ts piggy back ecu will let me know if something is not right.

So far I managed to find 3 that go to just 15psi full sweep (analog obviously), super cheap by the likes of VDO and AutoMeter, but I think they fall foul of Schnazzle's edict " ..and not one that reads 2psi under", and one from AEM which is prolly highly accurate but also well over £100... With digital I guess the PSI range doesn't matter so much but theres still the choice of AEM or cheap ebay style....

And yeah... the question of where to mount it! Something discrete like this: http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=377/category_id=-1/mode=prod/prd377.htm might mount directly in the dashboard somewhere.. then again it might get mistaken for a clock!

Damnit! Obsessing again! Modding really brings out the autism in me....

My boost gauge is in the centre cubby.
I dont need to see it all the time.
Just check it now and then unless i am really going for it.

From the look of your sig, you might like the TRD Boost gauge - its 0 to 10 psi, so no wasted dial space, in white or black. There seemed to be some places in the US still selling it, for about £140 delivered. I really wanted it but cant justify that, not with my current outgoings... Part numbers are : PTR37-34030, PTR37-35010 and PTR37-35020

Speedhut (http://www.speedhut.com/gauges/Boost-and-Vacuum-Gauges/?catid=f2&search=10%20psi) also do nice 1-10 psi ones but they're even more, about £160 delivered.

In the end I think I'll get a £20 digital chinese thing off e-bay to start with. If I find it useful but crap or innacurate I can always upgrade.

Re: turbo install - yeah thanks! i enjoyed it! Took a lot of photos to go on the readers ride thread, now I just need a long wet winter night to post 'em all up and do a write up.  s:) :) s:)
