Aftermarket exhaust that's not ASBO?

Hey guys,

Had my MR2 for just over a month now.

Enjoying it so far, but there are a few niggles I want to sort to make the car sound a bit better (along with the rock hard plastic arm rests on the door and centre console!!!).

I did get carried away looking at 2GR and 2ZZ engine swaps, but realistically I don't want to be spending the cars' worth just yet. Maybe if I get a decent bonus from work next year I'll change my mind.

For now I'm just looking to make it sound a bit better, if it unlocks a few ponies too then so be it!!

Is there a 'best' brand of exhaust that's not too loud? (i.e. you can hear it, but definitely not rude when cruising on the motorways?)

TTE/REMUS would be my choice but not cheap.
Fox have been fitted by a few members too.
Avoid Cobra if you want non ASBO
Could always try something custom from proflow or power flow.
Do a search it has been covered before.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Left stock the TTE exhaust was acoustically perfect for the car in my opinion.  However with the Zero exhaust manifold and PPE pipe combo I later added to my last car it was a little too much -  think about what you might end up doing in future since you're mentioning 2GR and 2ZZ upgrades and how that will affect the exhaust volume.

Thanks lads.

Nadeem, did you have a cat fitted or is the PPE pipe combo a "decat" pipe? Maybe I should just leave it all standard and then I don't have a reason to keep it when it comes to

Mine was the PPE pipe with high flow CAT and it certainly increased the noise in the cabin more than the zero manifold did.  If I was going with that combo again I'd get a Fox exhaust in the hope that it would keep the noise down a little more.

Think I'm going to go for a Fox for whatever setup I get - V6 1MZ if Woodsport can fit me in before I spend the money on the new house!

Can't tell from the pics but it looks like the Fox might not be such a pain to get the pipes aligned too which would be nice!

Thanks for the reply!

Did you explore getting the standard cat to fit the PPE manifold? I presume it would need a professional to amend the join?

My exhaust manifold was a Zero not PPE. I think the PPE might be 4-1 and need their matching cat pipe whereas the Zero manifold was 4-2. No amending was needed and I fitted both myself.

Thanks for the feedback Nadeem, appreciated!

I run a stainless steel e-bay special manifold, a standard cat, and a Proflow back-box. Gives a nice sound, with the occasional crack and pop on overrun.  s:D :D s:D  It's not overly loud, although I do come into my road in the early hours at low revs.
According to a MX5 driver I sometimes work with, and regularly overtake  the noise is a good tone. You know I'm there, but it's not obnoxious   s:lol:  s:lol:
It's not particularly obtrusive in the cab either (mind you, I do have quite a loud stereo setup as well!)
The Sun is out, the sky is blue,
The roof is down on my MR2,
And I\'m grinning, grinning ear to ear!
